Apple may be preparing to launch the cheap iPhone before the flagship iPhone 5S, reports claim
Apple’s budget iPhone may appear before the much-anticipated iPhone 5S flagship successor, reports suggest.
Brian White of Topeka Capital believes the cheap iPhone variant, rumoured to be made from plastic rather than aluminium, may be launched first.
White’s note to investors tipped the cheap iPhone as the ‘iPhone Mini’ a name we’ve seen rumoured before. Allegedly it will come in five colour variants including pink, blue, black and white. The fifth colour is unknown.
The analyst reiterated earlier rumours of a 4-inch form factor. It’s difficult to know how to interpret these claims. On the one hand, they’ve been around for a while and ‘where there’s smoke there’s fire’ springs to mind. Apple has repeatedly denied it will look at bringing a cheaper iPhone to market, but then it said the same about the iPad Mini concept before finally yielding to market trends.
Of the budget iPhone, Apple’s senior vice president Phil Schiller recently said: ‘Despite the popularity of cheap smartphones, this will never be the future of Apple’s products.’ Then on the other hand there’s the fact that analyst claims such as these are so often spurious and apparently based on little else but speculation and dreams.
Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive has previously said there won’t be any new product launches until the Autumn, but that means there’s potentially a lot of devices coming in a short space of time with the iPad 5, iPad Mini 2, iPhone 5S and a cheap iPhone all poised to appear before 2013 ends.
